How to Renew Global Entry in 2026: Beat the Backlog & Keep TSA PreCheck

Is your Global Entry about to expire while the renewal line is backed up for months? Don’t panic about losing your fast lane or your TSA PreCheck. If you renew the right way in 2026, your benefits keep working even while your renewal is still being processed. Here’s exactly how to renew, what it costs, and the mistakes that cost members their membership.

When to Renew Global Entry (Start Up to a Year Early)

You can submit your renewal up to 364 days — a full year — before your membership expires. There’s no penalty for renewing early, and with processing currently running about six to eight months, starting early is the simplest way to avoid any gap in your benefits. The golden rule: file before your expiration date.

The 24-Month Grace Window That Protects Your Benefits

Here’s the part that takes the pressure off. If you submit your renewal before your membership expires, you can keep using your Global Entry benefits for up to 24 months past the expiration date while you wait. Your Known Traveler Number stays active, so the Global Entry kiosks and your TSA PreCheck keep working at the airport. The date printed on your card is not a cliff — as long as you filed on time.

How to Renew Global Entry Online

Renewal is done entirely online through the official Trusted Traveler Programs website. These days you log in through Login.gov, and longtime members may need to link an old account first. From your dashboard, select the Renew button next to your Global Entry membership — not a new application — confirm your details, update your passport information if it has changed, and submit. One exception: if you’ve legally changed your name, you’ll need to visit an enrollment center before you can renew.

Fees — Plus Free Renewals for Kids Under 18

The renewal fee is $120 for adults and covers another five years. Good news for families: children under 18 renew for free, as long as a parent or guardian is already a member or applying at the same time. Each traveler still needs their own membership under their own account.

Do You Need an Interview?

Many renewals are approved without an interview — the vetting center decides, so don’t read anything into it if you’re asked to come in. If an interview is required, you’ll get conditional approval and several options: an enrollment center, Enrollment on Arrival, Enrollment on Departure, or a remote video interview if you’re eligible. Just don’t sit on it — you have 730 days to complete your interview, or the application is canceled with no refund. 5 Common Renewal Mistakes to Avoid

  • Waiting too long to file — after expiration you lose the automatic extension.
  • Counting on a reminder email that never comes. Calendar your own expiration date.
  • Starting a brand-new application instead of using the Renew button.
  • Panicking when your card’s printed date passes — if you filed on time, you’re covered.
  • Forgetting that each family member renews separately.
