How to Freeze Your Credit for Free in 2026 (All 3 Bureaus + 4 More)
Every year millions of people have their identity stolen, and most find out long after the damage is done. One of the strongest protections against it is completely free, guaranteed by federal law since 2018, and takes only a few minutes at each bureau. Most people never turn it on.
This guide walks you through freezing your credit at all three nationwide bureaus, protecting your children, and switching on the free federal tools that close the doors a freeze cannot.
What a credit freeze actually does
When your credit file is frozen, a prospective lender generally cannot pull it. Because lenders will rarely open a new account without reviewing a credit report, that single block is what makes a freeze one of the strongest tools available against new-account fraud.
Be clear on the limits. A freeze stops new accounts being opened in your name. It does not stop charges on cards you already have, it does not stop someone who has already taken over an existing account, and it does not cover tax refund fraud. It is your strongest first layer, not your only one.
A freeze also does not affect your credit score, and it does not stop you using the cards and loans you already have.
Freeze vs fraud alert vs credit lock vs monitoring
- Credit freeze – free by law. Blocks lenders from pulling your file. You must do all three bureaus separately.
- Fraud alert – free by law. Tells lenders to take extra steps to verify you. One bureau must notify the other two.
- Credit lock – a company product governed by its own terms, not by federal law. Some charge monthly, some are free.
- Credit monitoring – alerts you after something changes. Blocks nothing.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has said a lock is no more effective than a freeze. The reason to choose the freeze is not price, it is law: a freeze carries statutory rights and fixed legal deadlines that a company cannot change.
Step 1: Freeze all three nationwide bureaus
A freeze at one bureau does not carry over to the others. Online is fastest, and you will need your name, address, date of birth and Social Security number at each one.
- Equifax – equifax.com – 800-685-1111
- Experian – experian.com/help – 888-397-3742
- TransUnion – transunion.com/credit-freeze – 888-909-8872
Save your login and recovery details for all three. You will need them every time you thaw, and recovering a lost login is far slower than the thaw itself.
How fast it happens. By law, an online or phone request places a freeze within one business day and lifts it within one hour. By mail it is three business days either way. Within five business days of placing your freeze, the bureau must also send you written confirmation explaining how to remove it.
Step 2: Freeze your child’s credit
Child identity theft can hide for years, because nobody checks a seven year old’s credit report. Families often discover it when the child applies for a first loan, a first apartment, or student aid.
For a child under 16 you can request a free protected consumer freeze. It is a paper process at all three bureaus: you mail proof of your identity, proof of the child’s identity, and proof that you have authority to act for them. Send copies only, never originals. Every mailing address and document checklist is in the free guide below.
Step 3: Turn on the free federal tools
- Check your reports weekly. annualcreditreport.com is the only federally authorized source, and all three bureaus are now free every week.
- Stop the prescreened offers. Opt out at optoutprescreen.com or 1-888-567-8688. Online lasts five years; mail the form to make it permanent.
- Get an Identity Protection PIN. The Internal Revenue Service issues a six digit code that blocks someone filing a tax return under your Social Security number. It covers federal returns only, and a new one is generated each year.
Four more freezes most people never hear about
The big three cover new loans and credit cards. They do not cover everything. Someone who cannot open a credit card in your name may still open a checking account, start a cell phone plan, or put utilities in your name.
- Innovis – a fourth credit bureau some lenders check
- ChexSystems – the report banks use to screen new deposit and checking accounts
- NCTUE – the National Consumer Telecom and Utilities Exchange, for phone, cable and utility accounts
- LexisNexis Risk Solutions – public records and alternative data used to verify identity
One warning that catches people out: thaw these before you apply, not after. Banks and carriers pull these reports during automated approval, and a frozen file does not trigger a human review, it triggers a decline. Direct phone numbers and mailing addresses for all four are in the guide.
If it has already happened
Call the companies where the fraud happened first and shut those accounts down. Then freeze your credit and place a fraud alert. Then go to identitytheft.gov, the Federal Trade Commission’s official recovery site, and get your Identity Theft Report.
That report matters more than most people realise. Under Section 605B of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, once a bureau has it along with proof of your identity and a list of the fraudulent items, it must block that information within four business days. An ordinary dispute gives them up to 30 days while the bad entry sits on your report.
